Bnei Yissachar[1] posits: “What is Shabbat? It is the Name of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, a Name that is complete is every aspect.” Shabbat’s spelling has the gematria 702. The sum of the expanded spellings of the three uppermost Names— EHYe”H, 455; Ya”H, 15; HaVaYa”H, 232—also equals 702. These are the Names associated with the upper triad: Keter, Chochmah, and Binah. The shefa from the upper spheres flows down through the lower spheres to Yesod, which is the seventh sphere from (and including) Binah. One of the cognomens (nicknames) of Yesod is thus Shabbat.[2]
The Name associated with Yesod is El Chai—Living Gd—for Yesod is essentially the flow of Life into the world. Shabbat is the essence of blessing and holiness. Resting on the Seventh Day is the gift of HaKadosh Baruch Hu to all of Creation. This energy flows down from the highest worlds, as the upper spheres unite. The command to observe, guard, and honor Shabbat is an invitation to partake of this most holy, precious ta’anug (pleasure) of our Creator Himself. All of Creation rested, but those created in His Image have been beckoned to a higher level. While Mankind, as a whole, has not yet come to this consciousness, the idea of the command is that we might come into the fullest consciousness of this ultimate of blessings.
May this become the desire of our hearts, as we contemplate joining HaKadosh Baruch Hu in the higher levels of Shabbat rest.
