YESOD ~ Foundation

The array of the sefirot is called the Tree of Life.  The nature of the universe requires balance.  In the array of the sefirot this is expressed as giving and receiving energy or light.  The masculine side on the right is the giver; the feminine side on the left is the receiver.  So, too, the upper sefirot are givers, while the lower ones are receivers.  It is all relative, though, and this is aptly displayed through the very function of Yesod.  Located at the bottom of the array, Yesod receives all the energy from above, and, in this sense, could be seen as feminine.  Afterwards, Yesod releases the energy to Malchut, reverting to the masculine giver relative to Malchut.

“Yesod” literally means “foundation.”  This foundation is the flow of Life Force that parallels the sacral chakra.  It also mediates between the upper and lower attributes of Tiferet and Malchut, allowing the energies from above to flow into the world, and is therefore known as Shalom (peace).   This facilitates compassionate healing coming into the world, renewal and regeneration.  This spark of vitality also inspires creativity and energetic enthusiasm for new ideas.   Where death fosters forgetfulness, life triggers remembrance, so life force is about remembering.  We have a zeal for living, the inspiration of bringing new things into the world.  Sometimes our memory is nostalgic, but other times it could be the seed of revitalization, renewal, or repurposing of something gone by the wayside.   From the attribute of “lovingkindness” Yesod is called El, and from the attribute of life it is called Chai—thus the Divine Name of Yesod is El Chai.  One meditation for Yesod might be:

El Chai, may I be remembered for Life.
