The Birth Parsha

בײה

Astrologers, throughout history and in modern times, would agree that time is deeply relevant to the soul’s destiny in the world.  They look at the movement of the heavenly bodies and interpret the influence for inhabitants of this earthly plane.  The rabbis have never denied the validity of this, but have said that the destiny of Israel, like that of our father Abraham, is above the stars.  However, while the rabbis warn us not to look to predictions of the future, they do acknowledge an understanding of astrological influence on one’s personality.  This can be further understood by looking at the portion of the Torah that is read for the week of one’s birth, and more specifically, on the birthday itself.

All things that occur in the world are first determined in the courts of Heaven.  The soul is brought before the Throne and shown details of his life—who his parents will be, who he will marry, whether he will be wealthy or poor, whether he will be sickly or healthy.  Each aspect of his life is designed for the purpose of helping him achieve the tikkun (repair) of his soul—for his soul’s overall purpose in the world.  So, too, the timing and circumstances of his birth and of his death are determined.

In our sphere of reality, we mark time with a clock and a calendar.  We could say that time is marked in Heaven by the weekly parsha readings of the Torah and Haphtorah.  Although this may not be literally true, even so, we can see the correlation between the occurrences of events in this world with themes of the Torah portions read at the time.  (I noticed this quite strongly while living in Israel.)  This becomes especially personal when looking at the reading at the time of one’s birth.  Indeed, the Arizal taught that a person can discover his purpose in the world by closely studying the parsha of his birthday.

Over the years I’ve taught classes on the Kabbalistic symbolism in the Hebrew months and the significance of the parshaot read during each one.  I have also done personal astrological studies for individuals from a Torah perspective.  While there may be some very talented astrologers that offer readings, this Torah perspective adds something far more substantial.  More recently, for a few people, starting with my own father, I added the Yahrzeit (death anniversary) parsha, for this, too, is determined by Heaven.  It has been amazing to see the completion of the cycle of life, the connection of the beginning with the end.  And for the ones left behind, there is a deepening of understanding of who this soul was in the world and the of that very special soul’s connection to themselves.
