Before there were the 613 commandments, before the Seven Laws of Noah, Hashem instructed people on how to be children of Adam, inheriting “dominion of the earth.” There are cultures among the nations of the world that embraced this caring for the earth and her creatures in their national traditions. Unfortunately, however, in Western civilization there has been a pervasive attitude over the centuries that has fostered exploitation of resources and general abuse of nature. This has been encouraged by the all too common platitude: “This world is not our home.” YES, it is. YES, this is the world in which Adam was placed and for which he was instructed to care.
In the first chapter of Genesis, we are told that each creature was created “according to its kind…” This is a very important phrase that is reiterated over and over. Creatures were created “each according to its kind” and named specifically by Adam according to that uniqueness…the string of Hebrew letters spiritually paralleling the physical definitive sequence of dna code. In our time there is a tendency to think we can improve on nature by altering the genetics of creatures. This literally compromises the spiritual root of that entity.
Hashem said he gave “seed-yielding” fruit and herbs as food (Genesis 1:29-30). Now many items are hard to find with seeds, such as grapes. If He defined these seed-yielding fruits and herbs so adamantly, can our seedless varieties still be considered “food”…regardless of the convenience or taste?
Care of the earth was given over to Adam and his children. As we become more conscious of this responsibility, we become more Adamic. It’s good that we do see this consciousness growing among “New Age” people. However, we should understand that it is the most ancient of our commands…how to be human beings in the world created to be our home. It is Adamic consciousness…it is Torah consciousness…connecting with our Creator and His purpose for each of us.
